Grand Valley State University claimed a 58-53 victory over rival Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday afternoon, boosting their record to 13-6 on the year. Crystal Zick scored a game-high 15 points, dished out six assists and grabbed four rebounds to lead the Lakers to the victory. The Lakers' next game is on Thursday, Jan. 31 against Hillsdale College.
The game got underway with a three-pointer by Zick, giving the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Saginaw Valley went on a run and took a 13-7 lead early on, but another long shot from Zick made the score 13-10 with 12:17 left in the game. At the 9:26 mark, Zick hit her third three ball to give Grand Valley State the lead, 17-16. After the Cardinals retook the lead, Erin Cyplik, who finished the game with 14 points, buried a three-pointer with 3:16 left in the first half to make the score 27-26. Kim Wyngaard scored the last three points of the half for Grand Valley to give them a 29-28 lead going into halftime.
With 16:21 left in the game, the Cardinals took a 33-32 lead and extended that lead to five points two minutes and forty seconds later. Cyplik buried another three with 13:09 left to tie the score at 38-38. Cyplik's next three with 10:53 left in the game to give the Lakers a 41-39 lead. Cyplik's jumper at the 9:52 mark gave GVSU a lead that they did not relinquish.
Lauren Buresh's three-pointer with 6:22 left in the game extended the Laker lead to 10 points, 53-43. With 1:38 remaining, the Carindals pulled to within two points, 53-51, but were unable to close the gap. With 12 seconds left, LaTille Ross made it a one-point game, but Jocelyn Ingram made four free throws down the stretch to make the final score 58-53.
