Crystal Zick scored 20 points and Erin Cyplik hit the game-winning three-pointer to push Grand Valley State past Northwood 55-52. Zick's game-high 20 points led all players, while Kim Wyngaard scored 12 and grabbed six rebounds. The win was GVSU's 12th of the season, pushing their record to 12-6 with a 7-2 mark in the GLIAC. The Lakers now travel to University Center to take on Saginaw Valley State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The game started with a jumper from Wyngaard just 19 seconds in. She followed that up with a layup to make the score 4-0 in favor of Grand Valley. After Zick made a jumper to give GVSU a 6-3 lead, the teams traded baskets, tying the score three times until a three-pointer by Jocelyn Ingram put Grand Valley up 22-20 at the 6:58 mark.
Northwood battled back in the late stages of the first half, tying the game 25-25 with 5:29 remaining. They scored the next seven points to go up 32-25 before Zick hit a jumper with just less than two minutes remaining in the first stanza. With the score 34-27, Zick scored the last four points of the half to send the teams into the locker room with the Timberwolves holding a slim 34-31 lead.
Wyngaard and Cyplik opened up the second half with back-to-back layups to reclaim the lead for Grand Valley 35-34. Cyplik finished the game with 10 points, four steals and three rebounds. The Lakers went on a mini-run, scoring six points to go up 43-38 with 13:12 left in the game. Nicole Carr scored two points in the run. Although they were her only two points of the game, she also had nine rebounds, three assists and one block.
Northwood stormed back to take the lead 49-48 on a long ball at the 8:42 mark. But a free throw by Wyngaard tied the game at 7:37, and her second shot from the charity stripe gave the Lakers a one-point lead. Down 52-50, the Lakers relied on some late-game heroics to take the win. Zick buried a jumper to tie the score with 2:31 remaining, and Cyplik hit a three-pointer with just less than two minutes left in the game to secure the win for Grand Valley State. GVSU held Northwood scoreless for the remaining two minutes to grab their 12th win of the season.
