The GVSU women's tennis team continued its winning ways with an 8-1 victory over Michigan Tech in Allendale on Friday afternoon. The match drew a record attendance for Grand Valley as over 100 fans turned out for the match. The Lakers improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC while Michigan Tech drops to 1-4 and 1-3 in GLIAC play. GVSU will see action on Saturday afternoon as they play host to Lake Superior State at 10:00 am in Allendale.
The Lakers stole two of the three doubles matches to sneak out to a 2-1 lead. The team of Emily Zellner and Jenna Killips defeated their opponents in the No. 2 doubles slot by an 8-3 count. Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout also made quick work of their foes, winning by an 8-1 count. Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte dropped a hard-fought 9-7 match in No. 1 doubles. Killips/Zellner and Johnston/Trout improved their respective doubles records to 8-1 on the year.
GVSU swept the board in singles, taking all six matches from the Huskies. Killips defended the No. 1 singles slot with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Koopsen notched a victory in three sets with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win. Jackie Shipman stays perfect on the season in singles play with a 6-1, 6-1. Shipman is now 7-0 on the year. Trout earned a straight set win 6-1, 6-0 in No. 5 singles while freshman Katelyn Grashorn was victorious, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 11-9 in No. 4 singles. Rounding out the singles victories was Johnston with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
