GVSU Falls, 3-2, in GLIAC Tournament Championship Game

Grand Valley State fell, 3-2, to Gannon in the GLIAC Tournament Championship Game on Sunday morning held at Emerson Park in Midland, Mich. The Lakers fall to 32-16, while the Golden Knights improve to 37-13. GVSU will wait to see if they make the Great Lakes Region Tournament. The Lakers were the #4 seed in last week's poll. The announcement will be made later Sunday night.

Gannon scored first on a home run by Kristina Damis in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lakers tied it up with a run of their own in the top of the third inning. Sophomore left fielder Karen Walters started off the inning by singling to center field and then stole second. Sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra doubled down the left field line to score GVSU's first run.

The Golden Knights regained the lead as Carol Kienzl doubled to left center and then moved to third on a ground out. She scored on a passed ball to put Gannon up 2-1. The Lakers came back again and tied the game as junior designated player Elizabeth Smith led off the sixth inning with a home run to left center field.

Gannon scored the winning run the bottom of the seventh inning. A lead off walk started off the inning and a bunt moved the runner over to second base. The game-winning run scored as Jaclyn Corroto single to left center field.

Gannon recorded eight hits in the game, while Grand Valley State had six. Freshman right fielder Rebecca Plummer was 2-for-4, while sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith went 1-for-2 with a walk, run scored, and RBI.

Sophomore Lori Andjelich (16-6) suffered the loss, pitching all six innings. She allowed eights hits and two earned runs, while walking and striking out two batters.
