GVSU Knocks Off Wayne State, 5-1, in GLIAC Tournament

Grand Valley State knocked off Wayne State, 5-1, in its second game on Friday of the GLIAC Tournament held at Emerson Park in Midland, Mich. The Lakers improve to 31-14, while the Warriors drop to 37-14. Grand Valley will play Gannon on Saturday, May 5 at 12:00 p.m.

The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior first baseman Crista Buresh walked to start the inning and moved to second base after a single down the left field line by junior designated player Elizabeth Smith. The bases were loaded after a single through the left side by junior center Lisa Preuss. After two Laker strikeouts, sophomore left fielder Karen Walters was hit by a pitch to score the first run. Freshman right fielder Rachel Plummer reached base on a fielding error by the short stop to bring the second run home.

Wayne State cut the lead to 2-1 after a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lakers sealed their lead and the win by adding three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra walked with one out and advanced to second base on a single up the middle by junior second baseman Kristin Moleski. One batter later, Smith hit a three run homer to left field to give the Lakers a 5-1 lead.

Smith was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Preuss went 2-for-4. The Lakers tallied seven hits in the game and also recorded three errors. Wayne State had just four hits and one error.

Junior Stephanie Cole (14-6) tallied the victory, pitching 5.1 innings. She allowed just two hits, one run, and a walk, while striking out two batters. Sophomore Lori Andjelich picked up her third save of the season, throwing 1.2 innings. She gave up two hits and struck out one batter.
