Box Score

Grand Valley State defeated Northwood, 1-0, in its first game of the GLIAC Tournament held at Emerson Park in Midland, Mich. The Lakers improve to 30-14 overall, while the Timberwolves drop to 20-22. GVSU will play Wayne State at 4:00 p.m. Last season the Lakers defeated Wayne State twice to capture the GLIAC Tournament title.

The game was scoreless through three innings until the Lakers posted the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior center fielder Lisa Preuss doubled to left field to start off the inning. Two outs later, she stole third base and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Northwood threatened in the top of the seventh inning with a runner on second base with two outs. A single brought the runner home, but she did not touch the plate as she slid into home. An appeal by head coach Doug Woods resulted in the third out and the 1-0 victory for GVSU.

Northwood recorded five hits in the game, while Grand Valley State had four. Preuss was 1-for-2, scoring the game-winning run and junior second baseman Kristin Moleski went 1-for-3. Junior catcher Katie Kring was 1-for-2 and junior designated player Elizabeth Smith went 1-for-3.

Sophomore Lori Andjelich (15-5) picked up the win, throwing all seven innings of play. She allowed just five hits, while striking out five batters.
