Lakers Drop A 3-1 Decision To Southern Indiana

Akron, Ohio - Senior pitcher Adam Vetter yielded just five hits and one run as Southern Indiana advanced to the NCAA DII North Central Regional Championship game with a 3-1 victory over Grand Valley State in a winners bracket game Saturday morning. Southern Indiana improves to 40-21 and will play in Sunday's title game at 12 noon. Grand Valley State falls to 44-8 and will face the winner of the Drury-Saginaw Valley State game at 5 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game.

USI 2B Darin Mastroianni led off the fourth with a triple to center and Hunter Slade followed with a single to left to give Southern Indiana a 1-0 lead. Southern Indiana added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Pleiss walked to open the inning. Pleiss stole second and came home on a two-out single by Chad Werry. Alex Thieroff singled to move Werry to third and Garrett Oros singled to center to plate Werry.

Pat Radde led off the Laker seventh with a single to right, followed by a walk to Cory Maguire. Matt Nickels sacrificed Radde to the third and Maguire to second and Dan Skirka was retired on a 6-3 putout to score Radde. 3B Lee VanStreain was retired when the left fielder made a diving catch to deny the Lakers another run.

Vetter, who improves to 7-4 with the complete game victory, recorded four strikeouts and walked just two. Vince Rizzi took the loss for Grand Valley State and falls to 9-3. Rizzi yielded three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

Slade and Werry each drove in a run and collected a pair of hits for the Screaming Eagles. GVSU's Pat Radde tallied a pair of hits and scored the Lakers' only run.
