Lakers Sweep Northwood 5-1, 6-1

Grand Valley State took two from Northwood at GVSU Saturday afternoon. The Lakers improve to 26-9 overall and 10-2 in GLIAC play. GVSU will host Saginaw Valley State in another GLIAC doubleheader Sunday April 22 at 1:00 p.m.

In game one, Karen Walters's reached on a fielder's choice for the second out of the second inning. Sarah Holland singled through the right side, advancing Karen Walters to third. Nichole Woityra then singled to center field, sending Karen Walters in to score.

The Lakers tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth when Becky Rudenga singled to centerfield and advanced to second following a Karen Walters sacrifice bunt. Sarah Holland hit a triple to center field bringing Rudenga home. Kristin Moleski reached first on an error by the shortstop, sending Holland in to score and prolonging the inning. Senior Crista Buresh followed with a long ball bringing Holland in with her to score two, putting the Lakers ahead 5-0.

Northwood posted one run in the top of the sixth for the final margin (5-1). Sarah Holland went 3-4 with one RBI and Crista Buresh went 2-2 with two RBI in the first game.

The Lakers started game two off strong with two runs as Sarah Holland reached first on an error by the Northwood shortstop in the first. She advanced to second following a sacrifice bunt by Nichole Woityra. Kristin Moleski then singled to rightfield sending Holland in to score. Moleski then advanced to second due to an error by the Northwood rightfielder. Crista Buresh followed by singling in Kristin Moleski for the 2-0 lead.

The Lakers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Breanne Kronberg walked to first and advanced to second after Becky Plummer reached base due to an error by the Northwood third baseman. Lesley Bates came in to run for Kronberg, and was sent to score following a Sarah Holland single. Holland's single advanced Plummer to second. Nichole Woityra also singled, advancing Holland to second and Plummer to third. Kristin Moleski reached first on an error by the Northwood shortstop, which sent Plummer to cross homeplate.

Grand Valley added in two more runs in the top of the sixth with Sarah Holland singling up the middle of the field. Nichole Woityra singled, advancing Holland to second. Crista Buresh doubled to bring in both Holland and Woityra, making the score 6-0. Northwood posted one run in the bottom of the sixth.

Sarah Holland went 2-4 bringing in one Laker runner while Nichole Woityra went 2-3. Crista Buresh went 2-4, with three RBI.

The Lakers will take on Saginaw Valley State Sunday April 22 at 1:00 p.m.
