Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader with Ashland on Sunday at the GVSU Softball Field. Ashland won game one, 2-0 and GVSU came back to win game two, 9-2. The Lakers are now 23-8 overall and 7-1 in the GLIAC, while the Eagles are 23-10 overall and 5-3 in GLIAC play. Grand Valley will travel to Wayne State for a GLIAC doubleheader on Thursday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m.
Grand Valley out hit Ashland, 6-3 in game one, but couldn't push a run across the plate. GVSU left five runners on base. Ashland took a 1-0 lead after scoring a run in the top of the third inning and then added another run in the top of the seventh.
Sophomore pitcher Lori Andjelich suffered just her second loss of the season (11-2) as she threw all seven innings. She allowed just three hits and two runs, while striking out seven batters.
Junior right fielder Sarah Holland went 2-for-3, while junior second baseman Kristin Moleski was 2-for-3 in the game.
Grand Valley jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after posting two runs in the top of the first inning in the second game. With two outs in the inning, junior second baseman Kristin Moleski singled up the middle and advanced to second base as senior first baseman Crista Buresh reached safely on a fielder's choice. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith doubled to left field to bring in the two runs.
Ashland came back to tie the game at 2-2 as it scored two runs on two hits and a Laker error in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lakers blew the game open as they scored seven runs in three innings to take the 9-2 win. Smith started off the fourth inning with a walk and freshman Amanda Rumsey came in to pinch run for her. Freshman Breanne Kronberg reached first base on an error by the third baseman to give GVSU runners on first and second base. Junior center fielder Lisa Preuss singled to score Rumsey and two outs later, junior right fielder Sarah Holland doubled up the middle to bring in Kronberg.
Moleski doubled to left field to start off the fifth inning and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Buresh. Smith recorded her second double of the day, hitting the ball to right center field to bring in Moleski.
The sixth inning started off with a single up the middle by freshman Rebecca Plummer and she moved to second base on a single to left field by sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga. One out later, sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra loaded the bases as she reached first base on a bunt single. Buresh then blew the game open as she hit a grand slam to unload the bases.
Grand Valley tallied 10 hits in the game, while Ashland had nine. Moleski went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Buresh went 1-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Junior Stephanie Cole picked up her 10th win of the season, pitching all seven innings of action. She allowed nine hits and two runs, but neither run was earned.
