Lakers Record Third Straight Shutout With 7-0 Win Over Wayne State (Neb.)

Grand Valley State's bats continued to be hot as the Lakers tallied 12 hits in its 7-0 win over Wayne State (Neb.) on Monday morning in Ft. Myers, Fla. GVSU is 3-0 on the season and has posted three straight shutouts. The Lakers will play Saint Anselm on Monday at 11:00 a.m.

Grand Valley State jumped up to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. With one out, sophomore shortstop Nichole Woityra singled to the shortstop and advanced to second base as junior second baseman Kristin Moleski reached first on an error by the third baseman. One out later, senior first baseman Crista Buresh hit a home run to left field to bring in all three runs.

The Lakers added their fourth one as Moleski started off the third inning with a home run to right center field. GVSU posted two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Sophomore left fielder Karen Walters hit a one out single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the third baseman. One out later, Woityra singled to left field to drive in the first run of the inning. Woityra moved to second base on the throw home and then crossed the play on a single by Moleski.

GVSU recorded its seventh and final run in the top of the seventh inning. After two Laker strikeouts, freshman third baseman Stephanee Schrader doubled to left center field. Junior catcher Katie Kring advanced her to third base on a single to left field. Walters singled to bring in the final Laker run of the game.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Rohan tallied her first start in a Laker uniform and picked up the win. She threw five innings of action, allowing just five hits and had six strikeouts. Freshman Lindsey Pierzynski finished the final two innings of play and gave up just two hits.

Seven different Lakers recorded a hit in the game and leading the way was senior first baseman Crista Buresh who went 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI. Junior second baseman Kristin Moleski added two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored, while junior catcher Katie Kring and sophomore left fielder Karen Walters each added two hits apiece.
