Grand Valley State opened the 2007 softball season with a 3-0 victory over Quincy University on Sunday on its spring trip in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Lakers will play Holy Family at 3:00 p.m. today.
Grand Valley State jumped out to an early lead posting three runs in the first two innings. With one out in the first inning, sophomore shortstop Nichole Woityra reached first base on a fielding error by Quincy's shortstop. Junior second baseman Kristin Moleski advanced Woityra to second base as she tallied an infield single. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith singled to left field to bring in the first Laker run.
Sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga walked to lead off the second inning for GVSU. With one out, Rudenga stole second base and sophomore left fielder Karen Walters walked. Junior right fielder Sarah Holland singled to center field, advancing Walters to second and Rudenga to third. One out later, Moleski drove in two more Laker run as she reached base on an error by the shortstop.
Neither team scored again the rest of the game. Moleski led the Lakers, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Smith was 1-for-2 with the other RBI. Sophomore pitcher Lori Andjelich recorded the shutout, pitching all seven innings. She allowed just two hits, two walks, and struck out nine batters.
