Lakers Sweep Ferris State In GLIAC Opener, 5-0, 2-1

Grand Valley State swept Ferris State in its GLIAC home opener on Wednesday. The Lakers shutout the Bulldogs in game one, 5-0 and won game two, 2-1 in eight innings. GVSU improves to 16-7 overall and starts the GLIAC season with a perfect 2-0 record. Ferris State falls to 12-9 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC. GVSU will host Lake Superior State in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m.

In game one, Grand Valley State scored a run in both the second and third innings. Senior first baseman Crista Buresh doubled to right center field to start off the second inning. Junior center fielder Lisa Preuss moved her to third on a sacrafice bunt and Buresh scored on a wild pitch. In the third inning, junior right fielder Sarah Holland reached first on an error by the Bulldog shortstop, but got out as sophomore shortstop Nichole Woityra reached first on a fielder's choice. Woityra moved to second as junior second baseman Kristin Moleski reached first base safely. Buresh singled to right field to bring in the game's second run.

The Lakers took control of the game as they pushed three runs across the plate in the fifth inning. Sophomore left fielder Karen Walters double down the left field line to start off the inning and scored on a single by Holland. Holland moved to third on a single up the middle by Woityra. Ferris State brought in a new pitcher, but junior designated player Elizabeth Smith singled to left center to bring in the final two Laker runs.

The Lakers out hit the Bulldogs 6-2 in the first game and GVSU was led by Buresh who went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Smith was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Holland went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Lori Andjelich recorded the win as she pitched all seven innings. She allowed just two hits and one walk, while tallying eight strikeouts.

Grand Valley jumped out on top in game two as well, posting a run in the top of the second inning. Buresh started things off by singling to right field and advanced to second base on a fielding error by the right fielder. Two outs later, sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga singled to center field to drive in the first Laker run.

Ferris State tied the game at 1-1, scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game remained tied after seven innings, forcing extra innings. Woityra started off the top of the eighth with a double to center field and moved to third base on a single to left field by Moleski. Smith walked to load the bases, but Buresh and Preuss both struck out looking to give the Lakers just one out to drive in a run. Freshman catcher Breanne Kronberg reached base on an error by the third baseman to score Woityra for the game-winning run. The Lakers forced the Bulldogs into three straight outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to hold on to the 2-1 win.

GVSU tallied seven hits in game two and was led by Rudenga who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Moleski also tallied two hits in the win.

Junior Stephanie Cole started the game, pitching a solid 5.2 innings of play, but was not eligible for the decision. She allowed just three hits, one run, and three walks, while striking out five. Andjelich came in and pitched the final 2.1 innings to pick up her second win of the day (8-1). She allowed just one hit and struck out five of the eight batters she faced.
