Grand Valley State defeated Lewis, 54-37, on Saturday night in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 2-2 overall, while the Flyers fall to 1-2. GVSU will host Marygrove in another non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 6:00 p.m.
Within the first five minutes of the game, Lewis took a one point lead and then pushed it to seven points, 12-5 at the 13:31 mark. Grand Valley then went on a 10-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 15-12 lead. The Flyers then went back up by one point, 18-17, but GVSU closed out the first half on an 8-2 run to take a 25-20 halftime lead.
Senior guard Crystal Zick opened the second half with a three-pointer to push the Laker lead to eight points. Lewis cut it to three points at the 17:18 mark, but GVSU went on a 7-0 run to lead by 10 points with 11:21 left in the game. The Lakers hung onto a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game and ended the game on a 4-0 run to win, 54-37.
Grand Valley State shot 40.8% from the field, while Lewis hit jut 24.5% of its shots. Grand Valley pulled down 10 more rebounds (42-32) and recorded 17 offensive boards.
Senior guard Crystal Zick led the Lakers with 18 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Kim Wyngaard recorded a career-high 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Sophomore forward Nicole Carr tallied nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals and freshman guard Elizabeth Van Tiflin added six points and two assists.
