#8 Grand Valley State swept Northwood, 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-25) on Friday night in the GVSU Fieldhouse. The Lakers improve to 26-3 overall and 16-1 in GLIAC play, while the Timberwolves drop to 18-11 and 6-11. Grand Valley will host Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 4:00 p.m. in its regular season home finale. It will also be senior day for middle blocker Erica Vandekopple and libero Allyson Riley.
Grand Valley started off game one with a 5-3 lead, but Northwood battled back to tie the game at 9-9. The Timberwolves took a 17-15 lead, but this time the Lakers came back and tied the game at 17-17. Northwood went ahead, 21-19, and once again GVSU tied the game at 21-21. GVSU then went up 25-22 and Northwood hung in making the score 26-24. The Lakers then scored the next four points to take a 30-24 victory.
Northwood started off game two strong, taking a 5-2 lead, but the Lakers came back to tie the game at 6-6. The Timberwolves scored the next four point to go up, 10-6. GVSU came back again, tying the game at 14-14 and then took a 19-15 lead. It was Northwood's turn to make a comeback as they tied the game at 21-21. The two teams battled back and forth until GVSU took a 29-27 lead. Northwood scored a point, but the Lakers concluded the game with a 30-28 win.
Grand Valley took a 3-1 lead in game three, but Northwood came back to go ahead, 10-8. GVSU tied the game at 10-10 and then took a 15-12 lead. The Lakers went up 19-17 and then pushed it to four points, 24-20. Northwood cut the lead to two points, 27-25, but the Lakers scored the final three points to win, 30-25.
Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander tallied 18 kills, three assisted blocks, and hit .621 for the Lakers. Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple posted nine kills, four digs, and four assisted blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young added seven kills and seven digs. Freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin posted six kills, three assisted blocks, and three digs and junior setter Jamie Ashmore added 42 assists, 16 digs, four kills, and three assisted blocks. Senior libero Allyson Riley had 19 digs in the win.
Grand Valley State will conclude regular season play at home on Saturday, Nov. 3 against Saginaw Valley State at 4:00 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
