Senior guard Jason Jamerson's 3-pointer with 4:06 left in the game and the score tied at 41-41 sparked a 12-5 run that helped propel Grand Valley State to a 53-46 victory over Barry University in the Disney Classic. GVSU improved to 3-0 on the year and will host the University of Missouri-St. Louis next Saturday (Nov. 17) at the GVSU Arena.
Grand Valley State led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Barry closed to within four (26-22) at the half. Barry tied the game at 29-29 early in the second half, but the Lakers went on a 9-0 run to build a 38-29 lead. L.J. Kilgore started the run with a jumper, followed by a layup by David Thompson. Senior center Callistus Eziukwu scored five straight points, ending with a three-point play at the 7:50 mark of the second half. However, Barry went on a 12-3 run over the next 3:02 to tie the game 41-41.
Following Jamerson's 3-pointer at the 4:06 mark, Eziukwu hit a jumper from the paint to give GVSU a 46-41 lead. Barry hit a free throw to cut the Laker lead to four (46-42), but Jamerson drilled another three to up the Laker advantage to 49-42. Kilgore and Jamerson connected on four free throws in the final 16 seconds to secure the win.
Jamerson led GVSU with 22 points, connecting on 7-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-10 from 3-point land. Pete Trammell added 10 points and Eziukwu 10 points and nine rebounds. GVSU was 9-for-17 from three-point land for the game.
