GVSU Rolls Into Championship Match

The GVSU women's tennis team earned a spot in the GLIAC Championship on Saturday with their second 5-0 victory of the day, this time over Wayne State. Grand Valley advances to play #1-seed Northwood in the championship match in Midland, Mich. on Sunday. The match is slated for 9:00 am. The two teams met just 10 days ago, as Northwood downed GVSU on October 17 by a 7-2 score. The match marks the only Laker loss of the season, the squad stands at 11-1.

In doubles action, Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte picked up an easy 8-1 win in the No. 1 slot. Jenna Killips and Emily Zellner earned their second victory of the day, this time defeating Meghan Luzod and Deby Correa. Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston once again rounded out the victories for the Lakers, 8-2.

GVSU once again needed to finish just two singles matches to seal the victory. Koopsen finished her match in the No. 2 slot, picking up a 6-4, 6-1 win. The other Laker win came in the #6 singles slot as Jackie Shipman downed her opponent easily, 6-0, 6-1. The Lakers have now won 21 of their last 24 matches against GLIAC opponents, with all three losses coming at the hands of Northwood. GVSU will try to avenge those losses tomorrow in the GLIAC Championship match.
