#10 GVSU Knocks Off Wayne State, 73-50

#10 Grand Valley State defeated Wayne State, 73-50, in a GLIAC crossover Thursday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in GLIAC play, while the Warriors drop to 8-11 and 6-3. GVSU will host Ashland in a GLIAC contest on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 p.m.

Wayne State jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, but the Lakers cut the lead to one point, 12-11 at the 10:06 mark in the first half. GVSU then went on a 13-0 run to take a 24-12 lead. During the run, the Lakers held the Warriors without a points over a six minute span. Wayne State scored the last three points of the half to cut the GVSU lead to seven points, 28-21 at halftime.

Grand Valley scored the first five points of the second half to take a 33-21 lead. The Warriors scored three points over their own to cut the lead to nine points, but GVSU pushed the lead to 16 points (44-28) with at the 13:08 mark. Wayne State cut the Laker lead to 12 points with 11:42 left in the game, but Grand Valley went on a 6-0 run to go ahead, 53-35. GVSU held the Warriors scoreless over the three minute span. Wayne State cut the lead to 14 points, 64-50, however, Grand Valley scored the last nine points of the game to seal the 73-50 victory.

Senior center Julia Braseth recorded a double-double for the Lakers, scoring 24 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Senior guard Erika Ryskamp posted 18 points, four assists, two steals, and two rebounds, while senior guard Taushauna Churchwell added nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Junior guard Crystal Zick tallied seven points, six assists, and two steals. Junior guard Courtney Hammond added six points, four rebounds, and two steals.
