Lakers Sweep Saginaw Valley, 3-0

#2 Grand Valley State defeated Saginaw Valley State, 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-27) in its GLIAC and home opener Friday night. The Lakers improve to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while the Cardinals drop to 7-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference. GVSU will host Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 4:00 p.m.

The Lakers hit .218 as a team, while the Cardinals hit just .097. GVSU recorded 16 more kills, 11 more aces, and four more blocks than SVSU. The Lakers have won the last 15 matches against SVSU and have won 45 out of 46 games played.

Sophomore Danielle Alexander and senior Megan Helsen tallied 11 of the Lakers 16 kills in the first game to seal the 30-26 win. Helsen added four more kills and sophomore Lauren Reber added four kills as the Lakers hit .293 to take game two, 30-18. Helsen posted six out of the Lakers 16 kills in game three (30-27) to win the game and the match.

Helsen led GVSU with 15 kills, five digs, two service aces, while hitting .306. Junior Erica Vandekopple added eight kills, two aces, and two assisted blocks as she hit .357. Alexander recorded eight kills and one solo and four assisted blocks and hit .389. Senior Meghan Moore posted seven kills and one solo and three assisted blocks.
