Grand Valley State completed a successful weekend in the U.P. by defeating Lake Superior State by a 5-4 margin. The win marks Lakers' second in as many days. GVSU will return home on Friday, Oct. 6 for a match against Saginaw Valley State.
GVSU started slowly, dropping all three doubles matches to the Lakers of Lake Superior State. Celina Grondin and Lindsay Adams downed Lindsay Grimmer and Emily Zellner 8-5. In No. 2 doubles, Megan LaMothe and Alex Chiakmakis teamed up to defeat McCall Monte and Audrey Koopsen by an 8-3 count. Jaime Oppenlander and Jenna Killips also fell in the #3 doubles, 8-4.
Grand Valley bounced back in singles play, taking five of six matches from LSSU. Jenna Killips defeated Megan LaMothe in #2 singles 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Audrey Koopsen and freshman McCall Monte each triumphed over their opponents 6-1, 6-3. Also finding the victory column for GVSU were Emily Zellner, winning 6-2, 7-6, and Whitney Bindus, who recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Audrey Koopsen continued her winning ways for GVSU, improving her singles record to 6-1 on the season. Freshman Whitney Bindus is also boasting a 6-1 mark on the year. The tandem of Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte, who stand at 7-2, are leading the way for GVSU in doubles play.
