The Grand Valley State women's tennis team started GLIAC play in fine fashion with a 9-0 win over Ashland University in Grandville, Mich. The Lakers get to 1-0 on the season while Ashland falls to 4-4. GVSU will host GLIAC foe Mercyhurst (4-2) tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and follow that up with a match against Kalamazoo Valley Community College at 2:30 p.m.
In the #1 singles slot, Lindsay Grimmer defeated Kate Goudy 6-1, 6-0. Junior Jenna Killips and freshman McCall Monte won their singles matches 6-1, 6-0. In #3 singles, Emily Zellner picked up a win against her opponent, 6-2, 6-0. Jaime Oppenlander and Whitney Bindus wrapped up singles play with impressive 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 victories, respectively.
GVSU also played well in doubles action, sweeping the Eagles in all three matches. The team of Emily Zellner and Lindsay Grimmer beat their opponent 8-5. Audrey Koopsen teamed up with McCall Monte to win 8-3. Rounding out doubles play were Jenna Killips and Jaime Oppenlander with an 8-3 victory.
