The #4-ranked Women's Soccer team improved to 8-0 on the year and opened up its 2006 GLIAC campaign with a 6-0 victory over visiting Northwood Friday afternoon. Sophomore Katy Tafler netted her 18th goal of the year to lead the Lakers to the win. Junior defender Emily Berner tallied two assists on the afternoon. GVSU will now host Northern Michigan at 1 pm on Sunday, Sept. 24 in Allendale.
Senior defender Katie Rozum opened up the scoring for the Lakers as she drove a ball from 30 yards out that sailed over the keeper's head and into the back of the net for a 1-0 early lead at the 9:49 mark. Tafler followed nine minutes later with her 18th goal of the year when she took the goalie one on one after a feed from Berner to give GVSU a 2-0 lead. Junior defender Kourtney Willert made it a 3-0 contest at the 24 minute mark as she danced around Timberwolf defenders for 30 yards before beating the keeper for her first goal of the year. The Lakers made it a 4-0 game with less than three minutes before the end of the first half when freshman Natalja Stanski scored her first collegiate goal after drilling home a shot following a deflection caused by an Andi Redmond shot.
Senior midfielder Erica Rose scored her fourth goal of the season at the 61 minute mark when Berner picked up her second assist of the game. Rose darted in front of the Northwood keeper and finished off the goal for the 5-0 lead. Fellow senior Shannon Carrier scored her eighth goal of the season at the 66th minute mark after she and sophomore Ashley Elsass broke away and took a defender two on one to provide the final margin. The goal gave Carrier 100 points for her career. GVSU will now take on Northern Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1 pm in Allendale to wrap up its first weekend of GLIAC action.
