Allendale, Mich. -
#7 GVSU continued its offensive showcase Sunday afternoon in Allendale as the Lakers scored four goals in each half to claim an 8-0 win against Southern Indiana. Sophomore
Katy Tafler recorded her first collegiate hat trick and added an assist in the win. Freshman
Katie Johnson added two first half goals for the Lakers. GVSU will host Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 1 pm.
Tafler opened up the scoring for the Lakers with a goal just five minutes into the contest as she drove home the ball after a cross from sophomore Meaghan Robinson. The Lakers added three more goals in a span of eight minues as Tafler scored her second goal of the match on a ball perfectly placed by Johnson at the 21 minute mark of the opening session. Johnson added a pair of goals of her own just seven minutes later when she was left wide open in the middle of the box and easily scored. Johnson's second goal came less than a minute later on a shot from 25 yards out that sailed over the keeper's head and into the back of the net. Freshman Irie Dennis assisted on both of Johnson's goal and Tafler tacked on an assist during Johnson's first goal.
Tafler capped off the hat trick with a goal less than four minutes into the second half when she fired a ball just outside the box to give GVSU a 5-0 lead. The goal appeared to be the Lakers' last of the day until the combination of senior
Shannon Carrier and Dennis tallied three goals in the span of eight minutes, including the first two which were within a minute of each other. Carrier put the Lakers up 6-0 with a goal at the 79 minute mark on a shot from the left side of the box that beat the keeper in the bottom right corner of the goal. Dennis scored her first collegiate goal 59 seconds later as she scored on a breakaway after a feed from senior
Erica Rose. The goal capped off a three point day for the freshman. Rose added an assist at the 87 minute mark when the Lakers were awarded a free kick on the right side of the box that was knocked in by Carrier to provide the final margin. Rose finished the day with three assists. Sophomore
Kristina Nasturzio and senior
Erin Murphy combined for the Lakers' second shutout in as many matches.
GVSU will take Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 1 pm. The Cardinals are coming off a 20-4 season in which they advanced to the Great Lakes Regional before losing 2-0 to Northern Kentucky, who the Lakers defeated to claim the regional title.
