#1-ranked Grand Valley State dropped its season opener, 3-2 (31-33, 21-30, 30-24, 30-27, 15-9), to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at the Florida Southern Classic in Lakeland, Fla. The Lakers fall to 0-1 and will play #11-ranked Florida Southern Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Grand Valley won a tough battle in game one, 33-31 and took game two, 30-21 to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. However, Southwest Minnesota State won games three (30-24) and four (30-27) to tie the match at two games apiece. The Mustangs sealed the victory with a 15-9 win in game five.

Senior Megan Helsen led the Lakers with 17 kills and 30 digs, while sophomore Danielle Alexander tallied 14 kills, a .367 hitting percentage, and two solo and seven assisted blocks. Senior Meghan Moore added 14 kills, six digs, and two solo and five assisted blocks.
