Grand Valley State defeated Wayne State, 4-3, in the second championship game to claim the 2006 GLIAC Tournament Championship title. The Lakers won six out of seven games, including four games on Saturday to capture the title. GVSU is 34-19, while Wayne State fell to 32-24.
Wayne State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Grand Valley came back to score four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead. With one out in the second inning, sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith singled to left field. Junior Jandin Armstrong pinch ran for Smith and advanced to second base on a single to right field by senior left fielder Shelby Brayton. Armstrong scored as freshman catcher Ashley Sanak singled through the left side. Brayton scored one out later as freshman shortstop Nichole Woityra reached first base on a fielding error by the third baseman. Sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss walked and two more runs were driven home on a double to left center field by sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski.
Wayne State scored one more run in the bottom of the third, but the Lakers held them scoreless the rest of the game to seal the win.
Sophomore Stephanie Cole pitched all seven innings of action, allowing eight hits and three runs as she improved to 17-4 on the season.
Smith went 2-for-3 to lead the Lakers on offense and Sanak was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
