Lakers Advance to GLIAC Tournament Finals With 4-1 Win Over Gannon

Grand Valley State knocked off Gannon, 4-1 in the GLIAC Tournament Saturday. The Lakers improve to 32-19 overall, while Gannon drops to 39-16. GVSU will play Wayne State at 12:30 p.m. in the finals of the tournament. The Lakers will have to beat Wayne State twice in a row to claim the GLIAC Tournament Championship title.

GVSU tallied its first run in the top of the second inning as senior third baseman Denise Ireton led off the inning with a single to center field. Ireton moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman Crista Buresh. Ireton advanced to third base on a passed ball and came home on a single to center field by sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith.

The Lakers added three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman shortstop Nichole Woityra singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrfice bunt by sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss. Sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base. Senior third baseman Denise Ireton hit a home run to left center to put the Lakers up 4-0.

Gannon scored its lone run in the sixth inning. GVSU outhit Gannon, 9-4. Ireton led the Lakers as she went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Seven different Lakers tallied a hit in the game.

Sophomore Stephanie Cole (16-4) threw 6.0 innings of action, allowing four hits and one earned run. Freshman Lori Anjelich pitched the final inning and picked up her third save of the season, recording three strikeouts.
