Grand Valley State continued to be hot on offense as they defeated Ashland, 6-1, in the GLIAC Tournament. The Lakers improve to 31-19 overall and will play Gannon at 10:30 a.m.
Grand Valley scored its first run of the game in the top of the first inning as sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss hit a home run to left center field. The Lakers added two more runs in the top of the third inning to go ahead, 3-0. Freshman shortstop Nichole Woityra walked to start off the third inning. One out later, sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski hit a home run to left field to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.
Ashland scored its lone run in the bottom of the third inning, but GVSU came back and added two more run in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith started off the inning with a single to left field. Junior Jandin Armstrong pinch ran for Smith and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by senior left field Shelby Brayton. Freshman catcher Ashley Sanak singled up the middle and one out later Woityra doubled to left field to score the two runs.
The Lakers added their sixth run in the sixth inning as Smith lead off with a single to center field. Brayton reached on a fielder's choice and Smith was out at second base. Senior center fielder Tara Marsh singled up the middle to score the final GVSU run.
Grand Valley outhit Ashland, 8-3 and was led by Preuss who was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Smith went 2-for-3 and Moleski tallied one hit, two RBI, and a run scored.
Freshman Lori Andjelich (14-10) picked up the win, throwing a three-hitter and striking out six.
