Grand Valley State swept Lake Superior State in its regular season finale on Monday. GVSU won game one 3-0 and took game two, 7-0. Grand Valley State improves to 28-18 overall and 12-8 in the GLIAC, while Lake Superior State ends their season with a 10-36 and 0-20 record. GVSU has earned the #5 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will play #4 seed Ashland on Friday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m.
In game one, GVSU posted one run in the top of the second inning and two runs in the third to seal the 3-0 victory. Junior first baseman Crista Buresh hit a home run in the second inning to put GVSU up, 1-0. With one out in the third inning, freshman short stop Nichole Woityra singled and was brought home one out later on a home run by sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski.
GVSU out hit LSSU by a 6-3 margin and was lead by Buresh who went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman Lori Andjelich (12-9) picked up the winning, throwing a three-hitter. She also tallied nine strikeouts in the game.
Grand Valley State scored six runs in the third inning en route of a 7-0 victory in game two. GVSU tallied six straight hits to break open the game. Senior center fielder Tara Marsh started off the inning reaching first base on an error by the short stop. Marsh moved to third on a double by Woityra and both runners scored as sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss singled. Kristin Moleski singled and senior third baseman Denise Ireton singled to score Preuss. Buresh singled to drive in Moleski and sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith hit a two-run home run to give GVSU a 6-0 lead.
Grand Valley added another run in the sixth inning to seal the 7-0 win. GVSU out hit LSSU, 9-2. Woityra went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Ireton was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Buresh went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Smith was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Stephanie Cole pitched all seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five.
