GVSU Sweeps Ferris State, 6-2, 4-0

Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader at Ferris State Sunday. The Lakers won game one, 6-2, and shutout the Bulldogs, 4-0 in the second game. Grand Valley improves to 19-13 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC, while Ferris State drops to 13-19 and 1-5. GVSU will host Mercyhurst in a GLIAC doubleheader on Friday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m. and Gannon on Saturday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m.

Grand Valley State started game one on a home run by freshman short stop Nichole Woityra to take an early 1-0 lead. Ferris State posted a run of its own in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. GVSU, however, scored four runs with two out in the third inning to take a 5-1.

Woityra singled up the middle with two outs and advanced to second as senior center fielder Tara Marsh walked. Woityra scored on a single up the middle by sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski. Senior third baseman Denise Ireton doubled to left center to score two more runs. Ireton scored the Lakers final run of the inning as junior Crista Buresh singled through the left side.

Grand Valley added another run in the top of the fourth inning as senior catcher Megan Smith singled to the short stop with one out. Freshman left fielder Karen Walters singled and two batters later Marsh singled to right center to score Walters.

Ferris State added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Laker lead.

Freshman Lori Andjelich (8-6) picked up the win in game one, pitching all seven innings. She gave up five hits and two runs, while striking out five batters.

Woityra went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Moleski was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. The Lakers outhit the Bulldogs by a 9-5 margin.

In game two, GVSU tallied a run in the fourth and fifth innings and two in the sixth to seal the 4-0 win. The Lakers started off the fourth inning as Ireton reached first base on an error by the left fielder and moved all the way to third base on a passed ball. Sophomore designated hitter Elizabeth Smith drove in the run as she singled to left field.

In the fifth inning, Woityra singled to the short stop with one out and moved to second as Marsh walked. Ireton singled to right field, bringing in Woityra.

Elizabeth Smith walked to start off the sixth inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss. Senior left fielder Shelby Brayton singled to right field to bring in the first run of the inning and Brayton scored on a single by Woityra.

Sophomore Stephanie Cole (9-3) threw a complete seven-inning shutout, allowing just three hits. Woityra was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Brayton went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
