Grand Valley State dropped its GLIAC opener to Northwood, falling 2-1 in game one and 5-2 in game two in Mindland, Mich, Friday afternoon. The Lakers fall to 13-11 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC. GVSU heads to Saginaw Valley State for another GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 1.
Northwood scored a run in the second inning of the first game to take an early 1-0 lead, but GVSU tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore 2B Kristin Moleski singled to center field to start off the inning and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Senior 3B Denise Ireton drove her in on a single with one out.
Northwood scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Lori Andjelich (5-4) suffered the loss as she threw all seven innings. She pitched a four-hitter and only one of the runs was earned. Lori also tallied eight strikeouts. Ireton, Moleski and senior CF Tara Marsh all recorded two hits each for the Lakers. GVSU outhit Northwood, 7-4 in the game.
The Timberwolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings in game two. Grand Valley added a run of its own in the bottom of the third inning as Marsh reached first base on a muffed throw by the first baseman. Marsh advanced to second on a single by freshman SS Nichole Woityra and went to third on a sacrifice fly by Moleski. Ireton drove in the run on a single to first base.
Northwood added runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead. Grand Valley scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Timberwolves lead.
Sophomore Stephanie Cole (6-3) recorded the loss, pitching 3.1 innings. She allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and struck out three. Senior Kristin Jenner threw the final 3.2 innings, giving up just two hits, one earned run, and three walks.
The Lakers recorded three errors in the game and got outhit, 10-7. Woityra went 2-for-4 to lead the Lakers.
