Grand Valley Drops a Doubleheader to Lake Superior State

Grand Valley State dropped a doubleheader, 4-3 (9) and 6-3, to Lake Superior State in its home opener Saturday. GVSU falls to 9-7 overall, while Lake Superior improves to 8-11. Grand Valley will host Olivet in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 22 at 3:00 p.m.

Grand Valley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game one as they posted one run in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth. Senior catcher Megan Smith started off the third inning with a double to right field and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder Tara Marsh. The first GVSU run crossed the plate on a single to left field by freshman short stop Nichole Woityra.

Senior third baseman Denise Ireton singled to center field with one out in the fourth inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman Crista Buresh. Runners were on second and third with two outs as sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss reached base on a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw. Smith reached first and and both Ireton and Preuss scored on an error by the second baseman.

Lake Superior State scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game. The score was still tie after the seventh inning, forcing extra innings. Lake Superior State scored the winning run in the top of the ninth.

LSSU tallied eight hits and three errors, while GVSU had five hits and no errors. Woityra had one hit and an RBI, while Smith had one hit and two RBI.

Freshman Lori Andjelich pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing three runs, four hits, and two walks, while striking out nine batters. Sophomore Stephanie Cole (4-2) suffered the loss as she gave up four hits, one run, one walk, and struck out three.

Lake Superior State jumped out early in game two, scoring two runs in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead. Grand Valley fought back scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome the LSSU lead.

Senior designated hitter Stacie DelChiaro singled down the right field line to start off the fifth inning. Tara Marsh reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single by freshman left fielder Karen Walters. Sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski singled to load the bases with two outs. Marsh scored on a wild pitch and Buresh doubled down the left field line to bring in the other two runs.

Walters went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while DelChiaro was 2-for-3. Buresh went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Senior Kristin Jenner (1-2) suffered the loss as she pitched 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, three walks, and four earned runs, while tallying three strikeouts. Cole threw the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
