#10 Grand Valley State picked up a doubleheader sweep over Salem International Saturday afternoon, winning game one 11-6 and game two 20-5. GVSU improves to 11-3 and will play Concord in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
Game 1
Vince Rizzi picked up his third win of the year, yielding two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Rizzi notched eight strikeouts and walked two. GVSU scored a single run in the second, followed by three in the third, one more in the fourth and four in the fifth. The Lakers added two more in the seventh on a Chad Rohacs two-run homerun. LF Jeff Carrero tallied three hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored one. RF Nick Sandy picked up three hits with a double and drove in three. DH Lee VanStreain doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Aaron Melucci and Dan Skirka each tallied a pair of hits. Nick Smith added a solo home run.
Game 2
Grand Valley State scored a single run in the top of the first, but Salem answered with three in the bottom of the first off starter Nate McCrory. The Lakers broke the game open in the third with six runs, including four on a Spud McKenzie grand slam. GVSU added eight more in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh. Salem scored their final two runs in the sixth. Chad Rohacs tallied three hits, including a two-run HR and a solo shot, drove in four and scored three. Jeff Carrero tallied three hits, reached base five times, scored five runs, while driving in two. Dan Skirka tallied a season-high four hits and scored three runs. Craig Baugh notched three hits, drove in four runs and hit a two-run HR. Nick Smith had two hits, including a solo HR, while Brandon Bard and Pat Radde each collected two hits. Matt Middleton tossed two innings and freshman Cody Sharpe pitched a perfect seventh.
GVSU scored 31 runs and tallied 36 hits in the two wins.
