The #14-ranked Grand Valley State Women's Basketball team improved to 24-3 overall and 17-1 in GLIAC action with a 69-53 victory over West Michigan rival Ferris State Saturday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Junior guard Erika Ryskamp poured in 21 points and grabbed six rebounds on the night. The Lakers will host the Bulldogs this Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6 PM in the GLIAC Quarterfinals.
The two teams battled back and forth in the start of the first half as there were four ties and two lead changes in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Lakers took the lead for good at the 8:28 mark of the first half on an Erin Cyplik three-pointer that put GVSU up one. Grand Valley used a 9-2 run over the final 3:25 of the first half to build a 34-20 halftime advantage.
Ferris State battled back in the second half using an 11-0 run to cut the Laker lead to eight at the 5:03 mark. Grand Valley answered right back with an 11-2 run that upped its lead to 19 with 1:43 remaining.
Sophomore Crystal Zick had a great all-around performance scoring nine points, pulling down seven rebounds, and dishing out six assists in the win. Senior Niki Reams tallied 18 points, pulled down eight boards, and dished out three assists in her final regular season home contest. Reams, along with fellow seniors Jaida Bourke and Dawn Maynard were honored at halftime of the men's contest during the senior night festivities
GVSU has won 13 straight games and improved its home record to 12-1 on the year. The Lakers open the GLIAC Tournament at home on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6 PM against Ferris State.
