#16 Grand Valley Defeats Lake Superior State, 69-54

#16 Grand Valley State defeated Lake Superior State, 69-54, in Sault Ste. Marie Thursday night. GVSU improves to 18-3 overall and 10-2 in the GLIAC, while LSSU drops to 3-18 overall and 1-12 in GLIAC play. Grand Valley has won eight straight games and will conclude its four-game road stint at Northwood on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 8:00 p.m.

The game was closer in the first half than the score indicates as LSSU jumped out to an early 9-5 lead. GVSU cut the lead to 13-12 with 11:30 left, but LSSU went on an 8-1 run to take a 21-13 lead with 5:52 remaining in the first half. Grand Valley cut the lead to five, but Lake State hit a three-point to go back up by eight with 1:34 left. Grand Valley scored the final five points of the first half to cut the LSSU lead to 24-21.

Grand Valley came out strong in the second half, taking a six point lead on a dunk by Callistus Eziukwu at the 13:25 mark. GVSU increased the lead to nine points with 9:11 left and went up by 12 points (60-48) with 4:16 remaining. GVSU never trailed after the first three minutes of play in the second half.

Grand Valley shot 53.1% in the second half, afer shooting just 25.0% in the first half. GVSU outrebounded LSSU by a 37-29 margin, including a 14-4 margin on the offensive glass.

Redshirt freshman Pete Trammell led GVSU with a career-high 20 points and five rebounds. Sophomore center Callistus Eziukwu added 14 points and tied his career-high with 16 rebounds. He also added four steals and three assists. Sophomore guard Jason Jamerson recorded 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
