Grand Valley State improved to 8-2 on the year with a 89-67 win over Rochester College Wednesday night in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers knocked down a season-high 15 three-pointers in the win as junior guard Jason Jamerson tied a season-high with 23 points, with six threes. GVSU will now travel to Lakeland, Fla. to play in the Florida Southern Holiday Inn South/Ledger Classic on Friday (12/29) and Saturday (12/30) against #10 Montevallo and host Florida Southern.
Rochester tallied the first four points of the contest en route to jumping out to a 13-12 lead less than seven minutes into the first half. The Lakers answered by rattling off 13 straight points to take a 25-13 lead, connecting on three three-pointers on the run. Senior Kyle Carhart finished off the half with a layup just seconds before the buzzer to give Grand Valley a 20 point lead at the break. The Lakers connected on 9-of-12 three-pointers in the first half as juniors Jason Jamerson and Joel Whymer recorded four apiece.
The Lakers upped the lead to 31 in the first five minutes of the second half as sophomore Pete Trammell and freshman David Thompson converted a pair of three-point plays and Jamerson continued to stroke it from the outside connecting on a three and a pair of free throws. GVSU would reach a 35 point margin over the visiting Warriors before Rochester went on a small run at the end of the contest to cut the final lead to 22 points.
Grand Valley shot a season-high 62.5 percent from behind the arc and 56.9 from the field in claiming its second consecutive victory and improve to 6-0 in non-conference battles. Jamerson tallied a season-high 23 points while shooting 7-of-14 from the field and 6-of-10 from three-point range. Whymer connected on five three-pointers en route to 15 points and senior guard Brian Arnold scored a career-high 16 points on a career-high four threes. GVSU forced Rochester into 20 turnovers on the night and turned them into 21 points.
Next on the slate for the Lakers will be #10-ranked Montevallo on Friday, Dec. 29 in their first game of the Florida Southern Holiday Inn South/Ledger Classic at 8 pm. GVSU will then take on the host Florida Southern Moccasins on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 8 pm in the final game of 2006, before opening up the 2007 GLIAC schedule at home against Michigan Tech on January 3.
