Lakers Pick Up 72-53 Victory Over Northwood

Midland, Mich. - Junior guard Jason Jamerson poured in 23 points as GVSU improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in the GLIAC with a 72-53 road win over Northwood in Midland, Mich. The Lakers outrebounded the Timberwolves by an impressive 42-18 margin in the win. Grand Valley will return home to take on West Michigan rival Ferris State on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 8 pm in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

The Lakers and Timberwolves battled back and forth through the first half as the lead changed hands five times in the first nine minutes of action. After taking a 10-8 lead at the 11:37 mark, Northwood maintained a lead throughout the rest of the first half until Jason Jamerson knocked down a three-pointer to give GVSU a one point lead. The Lakers stayed within striking distance as the Timberwolve's lead never reached more than five. A Northwood layup gave the lead back to the Timberwolves at the 1:31 mark of the first half. The Lakers answered with a free throw from Kyle Carhart and a pair from Bobby Tiernan to give GVSU a 30-28 halftime lead. GVSU shot just 28.6 percent in the first half and turned the ball over 13 times.

Northwood tied the game twice in the opening two minutes of the second half before the Lakers took control of the contest. Senior Mike Hall drilled a three with 17:52 to go in the game to give GVSU a lead it would not relinquish. The Lakers extended their lead to an insurmountable margin with a 15-3 run which saw Jason Jamerson light up Northwood for 11 points in the span of four minutes and givs GVSU a 54-40 lead. GVSU would outscore Northwood 18-13 over the final 9:38 to secure the 72-53 win.

The win improves the Lakers' overall record to 5-1 on the year and 1-1 in GLIAC play. GVSU bounced back in the second half to shoot 47.9 percent in the game and fired at a 63.0 percent clip in the second stanza. The Lakers ripped down 42 rebounds on the night, while limiting the Timberwolves to just 18. Jamerson poured in 23 on the night and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior sixth man, Kyle Carhart, produced an all around game that saw him score 10 points, pull down eight rebounds, dish out seven assists, and register three steals. Fellow senior Dan Redder added 12 points and six rebounds in the win.

The Lakers will host Ferris State on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 8 pm in Allendale, Mich. at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
