#3 GVSU Defeats Northwood, 65-54 on the Road

#3 Grand Valley State defeated Northwood, 65-54, in its first GLIAC road game of the season Saturday night. The Lakers improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while the Timberwolves fall to 3-3 and 0-2. GVSU will return home to host West Michigan rival Ferris State on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 6:00 p.m.

Northwood jumped out to a 4-2 lead to start the game, but GVSU scored 14 straight points to take a 16-4 lead. The Lakers held the Timberwolves scoreless for almost eight straight minutes. Northwood cut the lead to eight points, 21-13, but five straight points by junior guard Crystal Zick gave the Lakers a 26-13 lead with 5:10 left in the first half. Northwood then went on an 8-0 run to end the first half. GVSU led at the break, 26-21.

Northwood cut the lead to three points to start the second half and then tied the game at 32-32 at the 14:14 mark. The Timberwolves regained its first lead of the second half on a jumper with 12:28 remaining, but GVSU took over the lead and went up by seven points, 40-47 at the 7:28 mark. Northwood cut the lead back to three points, but GVSU went on a 12-3 run sealing the victory with a 62-50 lead with just 1:17 left in the game.

Junior guard Crystal Zick led the Lakers in scoring for the fifth time this season, posting 22 points. She also added two rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Senior guard Erika Ryskamp recorded 16 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals, while junior guard Erin Cyplik had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Senior guard Taushauna Churchwell tallied nine points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal and senior center Julia Braseth added four points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals for the Lakers. Freshman center Lauren Buresh had two points and two rebounds.
