Lakers Knock Off Spring Arbor, 87-45

#3 Grand Valley State improves to 9-1 overall as it defeated Spring Arbor, 87-45 in a non-conference game Friday night. GVSU will travel to Highland Heights, Kent. to play in the Northern Kentucky tournament on Dec. 18-19. The Lakers will play #2 Emporia State on Monday, Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m. and #16 Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Grand Valley jumped out to a 23-2 lead in just the first seven minutes of action and never looked back. The Lakers took a 44-21 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. GVSU dominated the second half as well, going ahead by 33-points, 66-33 with 11:38 left in the game. Courtney Hammond scored out of ten points to put the Lakers ahead 85-43 with just 2:33 remaining.

The Lakers shot an amazing 63.0% in the game, knocking down 34-of-54 field goals. Grand Valley State recorded eight three-pointers and was also 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. GVSU scored 27 points off of Spring Arbor's 24 turnovers. The Lakers also added 16 fast break points, 12 second chance points, and 44 points in the paint.

Six Lakers scored in double figures in the game. Junior guard Courtney Hammond scored a game-high 14 points, while adding four steals and two rebounds. Senior Taushauna Churchwell recorded 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists, while freshman Lauren Buresh added 12 points and three rebounds. Senior center Julia Braseth posted 12 points and two rebounds and, while senior guard Erika Ryskamp chipped in 11 points. Junior guard Crystal Zick had 10 points, six assists, and two rebounds and sophomore guard Jenny Steffen added seven points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Junior guard Erin Cyplik pulled down five rebounds and added three points and three steals and freshman guard Carlie Holden added two points, three assists, and two steals.
