Saginaw Valley State's Luke Laser hit a three-pointer as time expired Thursday night at the GVSU Arena and the Cardinals claimed 72-71 victory over Grand Valley State. GVSU falls to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC action, while SVSU improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC. GVSU will be at Northwood Thursday for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
Saginaw Valley State led the entire first half and built a 12-point lead at the 12:29 mark on a Kevin Thornton jumper. GVSU went on a 7-1 run over the next three minutes to pull within three (33-30). Saginaw Valley State led 39-36 at the half. GVSU took its first lead of the game (61-60) on a three-pointer by senior forward Mike Hall. Hall later tied the game at 69-69 with a free throw and it looked as if the Lakers would have the last shot after Laser missed a three-pointer with 26 ticks left on the clock. GVSU's Kyle Carhart drove to the basket and was fouled with 8 seconds left. Carhart hit both free throws to give GVSU a 71-69 lead.
Mike Hall led GVSU with 18 points, while Kyle Carhart chipped in 15 points and six rebounds. Senior center Dan Redder tallied 13 points and Kilgore added 11 in the scoring column. Junior guard Jason Jamerson scored six points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. GVSU shot just 36.8 percent from the floor (21-57) and 65.7 percent from the charity stripe (23-35). GVSU also held a 44-38 rebounding advantage.
