Allendale, Mich. -
The GVSU Men's Basketball team claimed a 74-40 non-conference victory Tuesday night in Allendale, Mich. Junior guard Jason Jamerson tallied 16 points, including four three-pointers all in the first half of the win. The Lakers improve to 2-0 on the season and will now travel to St. Louis, Mo. to play against Christian Brothers (Nov. 24) and Missouri-St. Louis (Nov. 25) in the Missouri-St. Louis Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Junior Mike Hall made his first appearance of the 2006-07 season after returning from an injury and showed no ill effects of the time off as he tallied 11 points for the Lakers. Hall opened the non-conference contest with a jumper less than 30 seconds in and the Lakers never looked back as they jumped out to an 11-5 lead. Junior Jason Jamerson hit two and sophomore Pete Trammell hit one three-pointer on three consecutive possessions to open up the contest and give GVSU the early lead.
GVSU would cruise through the rest of the opening half and claim a 40-18 halftime lead. Jamerson led all scorers at the break as he tallied 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. Jamerson connected on 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc and pulled down two rebounds. GVSU forced the Peacocks into 14 first half turnovers en route to the 22 point lead at the break.
Upper Iowa tried to hang around at the beginning of the second half as they were able keep the deficit at 20 through the first five minutes, until the Lakers went on a 9-0 run that was capped off by a Trammell three-point play. Wilbur Ampey forced an Upper Iowa turnover then found fellow freshman David Thompson who passed the ball up the floor to Trammell, who took the ball hard to the rim and finished the layup while being fouled. Trammell would hit the free throw and push the lead to 30. The Lakers would add another run of the 8-0 variety late in the contest to seal the deal as they claimed a 74-40 win.
Jamerson led all scorers with his 16 first half points. He was followed by Mike Hall's 11 points and senior Kyle Carhart poured in 10 points off the bench. Ampey pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and tallied five points in the win.
GVSU will now travel to St. Louis, MO. and take on Christian Brothers (Nov. 24) and tournament host Missouri-St. Louis (Nov. 25) over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Lakers will return home on Nov. 30 to take on Saginaw Valley in its first GLIAC doubleheader of the year.
