GVSU Claims 81-52 Season-Opening Win Over Davenport

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State jumped out to a 38-22 halftime lead and never looked back en route to an 81-52 victory over Davenport in the 2006-07 season-opener Thursday night at the GVSU Arena. GVSU (1-0) will next be in action November 21st at home versus Upper Iowa.

Davenport jumped out to a 9-4 lead at the 16:05 mark of the first half, but GVSU went on a 10-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. Junior guard L.J. Kilgore hit a three-pointer to put the Lakers up 23-14 and junior guard Joel Whymer followed with another three pointer to give GVSU a 26-14 lead. A free throw by sophomore forward Pete Trammell gave GVSU its largest lead of the half (38-22) with 27 seconds remaining.

Senior center Dan Redder scored on a dunk to open the second half and the Lakers never led by less 17 the rest of the way. Leading 60-43 with 9:16 left in the game, GVSU went on a 11-2 run over the next three minutes to build a 71-45 lead.

Junior guard Jason Jamerson led GVSU with 20 poins and seven rebounds, while senior center Dan Redder added 13 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Pete Trammell chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds, senior guard Kyle Carhart 11 points, five rebounds and four assists and junior guard Joel Whymer 11 points. Freshman center Wilbur Ampey added six points and nine rebounds. GVSU held a 47-30 rebounding advantage, including 18 offensive rebounds. The Lakers hit 46.9 percent from the floor (30-64) and 40.9 percent from three (9-22).
