#6 GVSU Rolls Rival Ferris State 5-0

Big Rapids, Mich. - The #6-ranked GVSU women's soccer team claimed a 5-0 road win against Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich. Friday afternoon. Sophomore Katy Tafler recorded her fifth hat trick of the season, including her 30th goal. The Lakers improve to 15-1-1 on the season and currently ranked #1 in the region, will learn their tournament future on Monday, Oct. 30 when the NCAA Tournament pairings are announced.

GVSU rattled off 14 shots in the opening half, including seven on goal but were unable to find the back of the net as the teams entered the break knotted at zero. Senior Shannon Carrier tallied her 13th goal of the season less than seven minutes into the second half when she finished off a pass from Tafler at the 51:43 mark.

Tafler then went on a mission scoring three consecutive goals for the Lakers in a span of 2:51 to break an NCAA record for three consecutive goals scored, formerly at 3:30. Tafler notched her goals at the 65:35, 66:46, and 68:26 marks of the contest to give GVSU a 4-0 lead. The goals were Tafler's 28th, 29th, and 30th of the season to improve on her school single-season record. The sophomore now has 67 points on the season to lead Division II.

Sophomore Colleen Hillgard provided the final margin scoring the first goal of her college career at the 74:19 mark on a pass from Irie Dennis. GVSU improves to 15-1-1 on the year and 7-1 in GLIAC play. The Lakers are currently tied atop the GLIAC standings with Mercyhurst who is set to play Gannon on Saturday, October 28. GVSU sits at #1 in the most recent NCAA Great Lakes Regional Rankings, the top seed in each region will host the regional round of the tournament. Grand Valley captured the 2005 Great Lakes Regional title.
