#21 Grand Valley State tallied a 73-60 win at Ashland in a key GLIAC matchup. The Lakers improve to 17-3 overall and 9-2 in GLIAC play, while the Eagles drop to 15-6 and 7-4. GVSU will travel to Lake Superior State on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Grand Valley scored the first basket of the game on a layup by Callistus Eziuku, but Ashland quickly jumped out to a seven point lead (13-6) at the 14:28 mark in the first half. GVSU then went on a 20-6 run to take a seven point lead of their own (26-19) with 7:29 left in the half. The Eagles regained the lead, but the Lakers scored on three straight possessions to take a four point lead. Ashland cut the lead to three points on a free throw, buut a three-pointer by Kyle Carhart with 50 seconds left gave the Lakers the 39-33 edge at the half.
The Lakers shot 50.0% from the field in the first half and hit 6-of-15 three-pointers.
GVSU continued its hot shooting as they opened the second half with a three-pointer by Courtney James to increase their lead to nine points. Ashland cut the lead to six points (46-40) with 13:20, but that is the closest they would get as GVSU went on a 15-2 run to take a 19-point lead. The Lakers lead remained in double-digits the rest of the game, givig them the 73-60 win.
Grand Valley shot 50.0% in the second half and hit 10 three-pointers in the game. The Lakers recorded 29 points off of 21 Ashland turnovers, while GVSU committed just 13 of their own.
Leading the way for the Lakers was junior forward Kyle Carhart who recorded a career-high 19 points, connecting on 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. Sophomore guard Jason Jamerson added 18 points, three rebounds, and four steals. Senior guard Courtney James posted 12 points, nine assists, and two rebounds, while Callistus Eziuku added 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
