Grand Valley State Dismantles Northern Michigan 82-51

Allendale, Mich. - #24 Grand Valley State raced out to a 21-5 lead and never looked back en route to an impressive 82-51 victory over Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 1,834 at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU improves to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in GLIAC action, while Northern Michigan falls to 7-8 and 4-3.

GVSU had built a 10-0 before NMU recorded its first points of the game at the 16:52 mark. A pair of Dan Redder free throws put the Lakers up 21-5 at the 11:08 mark of the opening stanza. The Wildcats Marco Volcy hit a three pointer to pull NMU within 11 (22-11), but the Lakers outscored Northern Michigan 20-5 during the final 9:16 to take a 42-16 lead into the lockerroom at the half. GVSU maintained a substantial lead for the remainder of the game.

GVSU outscored NMU 32-12 in the paint, 28-10 on turnovers and 21-12 on second chance points. Grand Valley State held Northern Michigan to just 19.0 percent (4-21) shooting in the first half and 34.0 percent (16-47) for the game. The Lakers forced NMU into 22 turnovers and GVSU outrebounded the Wildcats 46-32 with 18 offensive boards. GVSU hit 41.8 percent from the floor (28-67 and 84.6 percent from the charity (22-26).

Jason Jamerson and Callistus Eziukwu led the Lakers with 19 points apiece, while Dan Redder added 15. Mike Hall pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds and scored seven points for the Lakers, and Courtney James chipped in six points and eight assists. James moved past the 400 assist mark (402) for his career.

Grand Valley State will hit the road for a non-league tilt at Upper Iowa Monday night.
