#16 Grand Valley State defeated #14 Lake Superior State, 63-47, on Thursday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse in a battle of two GLIAC North Division teams. GVSU improves to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in GLIAC action, while LSSU drops to 11-3 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC.
Both teams got off to a slow start as 10 minutes into the game, Grand Valley trailed 10-6. Lake Superior State led throughout the first half, before GVSU scored the last nine points of the half to take a two point lead (23-21) into the locker room.
GVSU shot 17.1% in the first half and LSSU posted a 32.0 shooting percentage.
Grand Valley started the second half on a 15-4 run to take a 38-25 lead with 15:15 remaining. GVSU expanded their lead to 19 points (48-29) with 8:18 left in the game. Grand Valley dominated the second half as they shot 50% from the field.
Leading the way for the Lakers was senior forward Niki Reams who tallied 21 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Sophomore guard Crystal Zick recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while junior center Julia Braseth added 10 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Taushauna Churchwell posted eight points and two rebounds.
The Lakers will return to the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. as they host Northern Michigan. The game will be televised live at Comcast Local.
