Sept. 4, 2005

Box Score

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State fell to regional foe Missouri-St. Louis Sunday (Sept. 4) afternoon, 3-1. For the Lakers it was their first loss of the season. Freshman Katy Tafler recorded the Lakers lone goal, scoring in her fourth consecutive game. The Lakers head on the road next weekend as they take on California (Pa.) and Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.).

Grand Valley opened up the scoring in the first half with a goal by Tafler from seven yards outside the box at the 18 minute mark. The Lakers went into halftime with a 1-0 lead over the Riverwomen. Grand Valley held a seven to three shot advantage after the first 45 minutes.

UMSL even the score six minutes into the second half when Tara Reitz beat the Grand Valley keeper, Erin Murphy, in the bottom left corner of the goal. The Lakers and Riverwomen battled back and forth throughout the rest of the second half until Reitz tallied her second goal of the day when she intercepted a back pass and got past Murphy to put the Riverwomen on top.

The Lakers tallied a number of shots with time running out but were unable to score. UMSL added a late goal after a penalty kick to lengthen their lead to two. Murphy stopped the penalty kick and the rebound shot, but was unable to stop a chip shot from the outside by Emily Worley. GVSU falls to 3-1 on the year and heads on the road next weekend as they face California (Pa.) and Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.).
