Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State Women's Soccer team improved to 2-0 on the year with a 5-0 win against Southern Indiana. Senior Jenny Swalec recorded her second straight game winning goal and Senior Mirela Tutundzic tallied her first goal of the year. Freshman Kristina Nasturzio recorded her second shutout, stopping seven shots. The Lakers return to action Friday, September 2 at 4 p.m. against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
Swalec opened up the scoring 11 minutes into the game on a perfect cross from Shannon Carrier. The Lakers added another goal to go up 2-0 at the half. Tutundzic drilled a scissor kick past the unsuspecting Screaming Eagle keeper on a pass from Ashley Elsass.
Grand Valley poured it on in the second half tallying three goals in an 11 minute span. Freshman Katy Tafler netted her third goal of the season on a breakaway goal to beat the keeper in the bottom left corner of the goal. Tara Stacy followed with back to back goals to up the lead to five. Tutundzic assisted on the second Stacy goal for the 148th point of her career.
Grand Valley capped off the weekend 2-0 in the Grand Valley State Soccer Tournament. The Lakers return to action September 2 at 4 p.m. against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and then again Sunday, September 4 at 1 p.m. against Missouri-St. Louis.
