Lakers Drop 7-2 Decision Against Wayne State in GLIAC Tournament

Grand Valley State dropped a 7-2 decision to Wayne State on Friday in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament held in Midland, Mich. The Lakers will play Saginaw Valley in the consolation bracket at 1:00 p.m.

Wayne State took an early 2-0 lead as they posted two runs in the first inning. The Lakers tied the game at 2-2, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior center fielder Tara Marsh singled to start off the third inning and was brought in as senior short stop Sarah Paape hit a two run shot to left field to score the Lakers two runs. Wayne State posted five runs in the top of the fifth inning to seal the win.

Marsh was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh went 2-for-4. Grand Valley outhit the Warriors, 10-7, but left eight on base.

Junior pitcher Kristin Jenner threw 4.0 innings and allowed six hits, six earned runs, and four walks, while striking out three. Freshman Stephanie Cole pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out two.
