Grand Valley State dropped a GLIAC doubleheader against rival Ferris State on Saturday. Ferris State won game one, 6-3 and game two, 6-2. The Lakers fall to 10-16 overall and 3-5 in GLIAC action.
GVSU had a 3-1 in game one, but the Bulldogs tied the game by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh. Ferris State added three more runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn the win.
Junior Kristin Jenner started the game for the Lakers, pitching 6.1 innings. She gave up four hits, one earned run, six walks, while striking out seven. Freshman Stephanie Cole suffered the loss, throwing 2.0 innings, while giving up four hits and two earned runs. Sophomore Allison Crews pitched the final 0.2 innings and gave up two hits.
Grand Valley out hit Ferris State, 11-10, but tallied four errors in the game and left 12 on base.
Four Lakers tallied two hits apiece, while three recorded a hit each. Freshman designated player Elizabeth Smith went 2-for-4 with a RBI, while third baseman Denise Ireton was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
The Lakers trailed 1-0 after the third inning in game two, but put up two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs added four runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth to pick up the win. Crews recorded the loss, falling to 3-8 on the year. She threw 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs, while striking out three. Cole pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up three hits and two runs.
Junior center fielder Tara Marsh was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
The Lakers will travel to Cornerstone for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 11 at 4:00 p.m.
