Lakers Split GLIAC Doubleheader At Wayne State

Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader at Wayne State Saturday, falling 3-2 in game one, but coming back to win 9-4 in game two. GVSU is now 22-18 overall and 11-7 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will end regular season play in a GLIAC doubleheader against Ashland. The games will be held at Wayne State University, with game one slated for 1:00 p.m.

Wayne State took a 2-0 lead after four innings of action in game one, scoring a run in the second inning and another in the fourth. Grand Valley came back to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning. Senior shortstop Sarah Paape started off the sixth inning with a double to left field and scored on a two out single down the right field line by freshman second baseman Kristin Moleski. Freshman right fielder Sarah Holland knocked in the second run with a single up the middle.

The leadoff batter in the ninth inning, Wayne State's left fielder Meredith Boxberger, hit a home run to left field to win the game for the Warriors. Junior Kristin Jenner (9-3) pitched all 8.0 innings and suffered the loss. She alloweed six hits, three earned runs, and two walks, while recording seven strikeouts.

Paape, Holland, and junior catcher Megan Smith all recorded two hits each for the Lakers. GVSU out hit WSU, 9-6, but the Lakers stranded 12 on base.

Wayne State scored four runs in the first inning to take an early lead in game two, however, the Lakers posted four runs of their own in both the third and fourth innings.

Sophomore Jandin Armstrong led off the third inning with a double to center field. Junior center fielder Tara Marsh walked and advanced to second as Paape reached base on a fielder's choice. Sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh singled to center field to load the bases. Freshman designated player Elizabeth Smith and junior third baseman Denise Ireton recorded back-to-back walks to bring in the first two Laker runs. Moleski singled to second base to add the third run and the fourth run scored on a single by Megan Smith.

Marsh led off the fourth inning with a walk and advanced to second as Paape reached base on an error by the third baseman. Elizabeth Smith hit a three run home run to left field and Ireton hit a solo shot to center field to give the Lakers an 8-0 lead.

Buresh singled to left field to start off the sixth inning and pinch runner Brittany Hay advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hay moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the catcher for GVSU's final run of the game.

Sophomore Allison Crews started the game for the Lakers, throwing 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. Freshman Stephanie Cole (6-6) picked up the win, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.

Buresh was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Moleski and Armstrong tallied two hits each.
