Lakers Split GLIAC Home Games With Lake Superior State

Grand Valley State split another GLIAC home doubleheader on Sunday against Lake Superior State, dropping game one 3-0 and coming back with a 10-2 win in game two. GVSU is now 8-14 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC action, while Lake Superior State is 6-13 and 1-3. Grand Valley will travel to Olivet College on Thursday, April 7 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. before returning home to host rival Ferris State on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m.

Lake Superior State tallied a run in the top of the third inning to take the early lead and added two more runs in the fifth to seal the 3-0 win. Sophomore Allison Crews (2-7) recorded the loss, pitching six innings of action. She allowed four hits, two earned runs, while striking out two. Freshman Stephanie Cole pitched the final inning of play.

Grand Valley out hit Lake Superior, 5-4, but recorded two errors and left seven runners on base.

Junior catcher Megan Smith went 2-for-3, while junior center fielder Tara Marsh, freshman second baseman Kristin Moleski, and junior third baseman Denise Ireton each recorded a hit for the Lakers.

Lake Superior State scored first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but GVSU came back and put two on the board in the second inning to take the 2-1 lead. Ireton reached first base on a error by the center fielder and stole second base. She scored as Megan Smith singled to left field. Smith moved to third base on a single by freshman Lisa Preuss and scored on a ground out by freshman Brittany Hay.

LSSU tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second, but GVSU added another run in the top of the third as freshman designated hitter Elizabeth Smith hit a home run to center field.

Hay hit a one out triple to right field and scored the Lakers fourth run on a ground out by Moleski. The Lakers posted two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Elizabeth Smith doubled to left center field and was brought in as Ireton tallied the Lakers second home run of the game to right center field.

Grand Valley added one more run in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to score in every inning but the first. The Lakers were led by Elizabeth Smith who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Moleski went 2-for-5 with three RBI, Ireton was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Marsh and Preuss tallied two runs as well.

GVSU out hit Lake Superior State 14-5 and posted six extra base hits.

Cole (2-5) picked up the win for GVSU, throwing 3.0 innings. She allowed four hits and two runs, although neither were earned. Junior Kristin Jenner came in to throw the final 4.0 innings and allowed just one hit.
